You cannot match gain by ear and obtain valid comparisons. I am happy to accept that one sounds better than another, but really for a technically based person experieneced in hi fi, you need to concede that gain matching is a prerequisite to a valid comparison.I myself have made many invalid copmparisons by matching level by ear. Match the levels properly by instrument to 0.1 dB, and you hear different things.
