It's a shame Philips went and botched the SACD1000. The SACD1000 shared the D/A stages with it's more expensive Marantz couterparts. Where Philips chose to skimp was the output stage, and that worthless MACE chipset. I concur that the Marantz D/A converters are superior to those used in the flagship Sony players.I also have a Marantz SACD 1000, heavily modded by Dan Wright of modWright. I had the player previously paired to a pair of CLS IIz, and then briefly Apogee Scintilla's. In the first couple days, the sound was validation for me to sell my Wadia 861. There really was no comparison on redbook playback. The $5K invested in the Philips rivals the best redbook playback I've heard from any available commercial unit, at any price. From aural memory, even the Linn CD12 didn't match the effortless and natural play of the modWright SACD1000.
Regardless of your aftermarket specialist, I think it's in the best interest to listen to one of these statement modded players before spending the big bucks on some of those "Class A+" players.
Kind Regards,
Rup
