Home Hi-Rez Highway

New high resolution SACD releases, players and technology.

There's two issues here

How close the signal on the disc is to the original, and how close we're getting to extracting the maximum content from the disc.

I still hold that the only way to judge the former is in the studio, not in the home. Traditional measures of high-fidelity don't necessarily apply. Real world sounds can be dull. I experience this often when I attend concerts. With recordings, I'm in no real position to judge as I'm likely unfamiliar with the venue and don't know the perpective from which it was miked etc. There are ample posts here complaining about differences in perspective. I personally find Exton's orchestral recordings closest to my experiences ... but this doesn't necessarily mean these are more accurate.

Regarding playback, I don't think anyone pretends that first (or even second, third) generation SACD players are the last word. I accept that the Meitner has closed the gap considerably. Designers like Charles Hansen I'm sure would argue that even more can be done in the output stage, reducing noise levels etc.

All I think your observations mean is that vinyl delivers more of what you want. And there's no question that vinyl is great sound for the buck! It's just that I haven't seen any concrete evidence that SACD comes up short in frequency bandwidth, overall dynamic range or transient response to make me think it should be inherently inferior to vinyl.
