I'm able to play the redbook CD layer just fine from my computer. I'm using WindowsXP on a machine I put together and can play it from my DVD ROM drive (Lite-On 163B).
I've read elsewhere that 1st generation DVD ROM drives have problems with finding the CD layer on hybrids, but almost all 2nd generation ones and later have no problem with this. usafwso, if you are experiencing this problem on a machine that has an older DVD drive, upgrading to a newer DVD drive should solve this for you.
