I think the Grado is better than the 40 - the AT 50 however I like considerably more and bought a pair - and the build quality is better than the 40 - but it costs more $$ naturally.
Headphone buying can be tough - because at any given price point a different brand can put out something very good. I like the cheapie AKGs for example - bass heavy but still pretty good overall around $40. I liked the Senn 580 and 600 but the one priced in the middle 595 or something I thought sounded rather terrible for the money - go figure.
I don't like any can that presses on the ear - I will have to take them off shortly so no matter how good they may sound they're useless to me. Over the ear is more comfortable - to me. But of course they are bulkier.
