I know what you mean. My best pal had/ has a set of DQ10's, and during the day, they were exceptional. I had a set of DQ20i's, and they were even better - taller soundstage, and they Totally disappeared.
Things have moved on, and there are speakers out there that are super room friendly, my experience is that a good match up between a high-quality ribbon tweeter, and cone drivers can even better the sound of the 20i's...
I've only seen the 30i's, and they might be the best of the breed...
I've found it's all about tuning - cables, tubes, and yes, even tweaks can get me there - it's taken a few years, but it definitely is do-able - I pretty much plunked my speakers down, then adjusted the toe, and I haven't touched 'em since, and that ribbon tweet just makes 'em even more room friendly...They sound great as dedicated listening speakers, and great as background from the next room and the kitchen, both of which are open to the listening room. The only room treatment I have is a pair of silk Ficus trees, behind and to the side of the speakers, and this in a room with Mylar shades on (4) 5 X 5 windows..
The concept of the Dahlquists was semi-open baffle, and that's a good way to go...
You could find a nice used pair, and have Regnar rebuild 'em for ya, but I've heard better...
It's kind of funny, I went on a search for a headphone setup that was close to the first headphone setup I ever heard, (somewhere in the 60's) and I'm super close, with a pair of Denon 2000's, and a custom amp - it's the nostalgia thing at work, and it's pretty cool.
