A good headphone amplifier is really handy to have. I am going DIY because of money issues. I will let you guys know how it turns out and I will have then, three headphone amps to compare, maybe, FOUR if I include the one on the CD player.
At this point, I am happy with ALL. They all sound different, yet are all enjoyable.
I will probably put the new headphone amp on the processor out loop of the amplifier I already have (they should really all come with headphone circuits, I mean, after spending a couple of thou, come-on now!)
Otherwise, a headphone amp that has multiple selectable inputs is also nice, so I can deal with multiple sources. Sounds like we should call it a 'preamp' at that point!
