Depending on your headphones, and this is a pretty great option for Sennheiser HD600 and HD650, the Bottlehead Crack kit is $279. It is OTL.

For lower impedance headphones, the Bottlehead S.E.X. is a nice choice and can be used to drive sensitive speakers. So its quite versatile. But the kit is a little over your budget at $539.

Both kits have upgrade options if you want to up the performance down the road.

I have assembled and still use the Crack amp. The instructions provided are first rate, IMO.
