Last year, when I first started thinking about getting a pair of phones, the AKG 701 was the hot ticket. But, even a used pair was out of my price range considering I was being advised that to make them sound good I should spend $500 or so on an amp (I can't remember what was recommended).

For all I know that may have been good advice or bad. Either way, I'm glad I waited.
