Houston Audio Society Meeting , October 3

As is the custom, the HAS met on the first Saturday of the month. The topic was whether power cords affect the sound and, if so, to what extent. A number of different brands of power cords were represented including Tara, TG, Electroglide and Brian Ackerman's Heighliner. All substitutions were done using a Sony SACD player with the power cords initially plugged into the wall but later into assorted power conditioners (Power Wedge, Adcom, Tara). Every one of the after market cords was clearly better than the stock Belden power cord with the possible exception of the Tara, which at $800 was a disappointment. Three different Tg cords were compared including the SLVR, an I squared and an older A. Although there was a family resemblance between the cords, the SLVR was clearly the cleanest and most extended at the frequency extremes with the best stage. It was tonally somewhat leaner (more neutral, less euphonic) in the mid bass in comparison to the I2 on the test system. The concensus of opinion was that the Electroglide and Heighliner were the best of the cords auditioned but given their pricing at the $2000 level, not a real world choice for most people. The TG's were thought best for the money, with the SLVR being rated third best of all the cords auditioned. Both the Electroglide and the Heighliner excelled in creating a black background with excellent detail and focus with great top end extension without any brightness or glare. Both also had a neutral or slightly warm tonal balance. Of the two the Heighliner was the better. Using the Heighliner plugged into any of the filters caused varying degrees of veiling and degradation. Of the filters tested the Tara had by far the least negative effect on the sound but all preferred the Heighliner plugged directly into the wall.
