Welcome from down under!
We currently ship the DCX2496 with 5 presets loaded. They allow the user to choose the best location of the speaker in the room and then load the related preset in order to optimize the performance of the speaker in the room.
Dipole speakers produce less bass as they are placed closer to the wall behind them due to cancelation effects. Therefore the 3-6 file (3ft from wall, listener 6ft from speaker) has different level of bass equalization than say the 6-10 file in order to produce the same frequency balance. In this way we can produce an flat, even tonal balance regardless of speaker placement. This does not, however, deal with room modes and is not a room correction substitute. The idea is that a speaker with dipole bass excites room modes 2/3rds less than box speakers and is in less need of a room correction processor. That said, a premium unit such as the DEQX will produce better sound than the DCX, but at a very dramatic price difference.
Our approach also allows the setup to be plug and play without all the technical work involved in setting up a DEQX. We have found this approach to be very effective and repeatable in the field. Overall, this preset system is one of a number of features allowing extemely high levels of performance and a sane price point.
The DCX we include is a stock unit. There are many companies that provide upgrades for this unit and we will try to evaluate as many of these units as we can and post our response.
