Elekit in Japan

Elekit has been around for a long time now. And even in Sendai where I live — a city in Northern Honshu that is distinctly uninterested in audio — there are two retailers that stock them, and another from which I can order. MJ Audio Technology is a Japanese publication that is devoted to DIY audio. MJ started publication back in the first days of radio when radio enthusiasts often had to construct their own sets. It is perhaps the oldest publication of its type in the world. A recent edition was devoted to the building of Elekits. Various models were brilliantly illustrated in successive stages of construction. This is remarkable because MJ is a very serious publication that usually presents projects that are unapologetically very technical. Many of its readers are bottlehead types who scratch-build their gear and then go to conferences where their work is auditioned and tested. Elekits have an established and enduring niche in Japanese audio culture, and MJ has accordingly certified them as a portal into the world of the shinkukan no mahniyaku — the vacuum tube maniac!
