I'd tried the pair of EI KT-90s I had in the TU-879S shortly after I'd bought it and I did not hear much difference between the KT-90s and the 6L6s when it was totally stock. In fact, I preferred the 6L6s because they just sounded more musical.
After changing out the coupling caps to Mundorf Silver in Oils the sound became noticeably better and I continued running the 6L6s for many months. I've probably put 300-400 hours on the SIO caps now. The other day I decided to try out the KT-90s again and WOW, what a difference there was. The sound was fuller all around and there was a lot more bass. There was a big difference and it was obvious.
If anyone does any upgrades on their equipment, try tube rolling after the parts get settled-in. As they were breaking in they would sound thin one day and the next they were overly bassy and they would change in sound for about a month or more. It took about 200 hours for the SIOs to stabilize and keep the sound they now have. That's the experience I had and now I can try rolling some different tubes again. Next will be the 807s as soon as I get some adapters......
