I use a highly updated ST-70 daily ... driven by a vintage Marantz 7T preamp and the sound is wonderful. Everyday speakers are Klipschorns. I moved a pair of Dynaco A25's from their "rear speaker position" and placed them in front of the Khorns for a listen last evening.

While vintage A25's are not really bookshelf speakers, they are fairly small. The stereo image from both CD's and LP's is very good with modest bass, lovely midrange, and satisfactory highs. The sonic hologram is beautiful with excellent width and very good depth.

From both a size and sound standpoint, you would be hard pressed to find a better low cost solution for your present situation. And, you can always move the A25's to the rear position when you upgrade the fronts.
