Hi, just got the new Stereophile. There is a great review on the DeVore Orangutan O/baby by Ken McCallef. When I look at it and know it uses Seas and Vjfa drivers I think back to the Dynaco speaker line.It kind of looks like it uses the configuration of the Dyna A-25 with a tweeter in better location(A-25 Mark 2},in line with the woofer and top,in a Dynaco A-50 body, minus an extra woofer.
The graph John Atkinson showed was the best I've ever seen for a 2 way and is flat to 30 hz.This is done with a 7 inch Seas woofer. In my old High Fidelity mags I have the frequency graphs for most of the whole old Dynaco line which all seemed to be flat at 50 hz.They all had a Seas paper woofer but 10 inch instead of 7 inch like the O/baby.
My question is; How are they achieving such low bass with a smaller woofer. Why won't DeVore declare cap and resistor values?Couldn't that bring more trouble down the road? I think if they told all they would sell more.
I think the inside should of been addressed.Dynaco never really showed the aperodic internal vent they used on the A-35 and A40XL.It took me years,I didn't want to mess with a good working one to see whats inside. The O/baby with such fine specs you think might want to show off the inside to explain why?
One last thing was the letter in the beginning of the mag to John Atkinson about high distortion in a sub. I also noticed the sub's distortion was very high in last months Wilson sub review. For a 7 inch woofer to be flat at 30 hz doesn't the speaker suffer transient intermodulation distortion when at the same tjme trying to produce another frequency in the woofers range?.
It is a beautiful speaker though and I wish I could hear it...Mark Korda
