The best way to evaluate any new component

Is in context of a suitable and familiar system.

I appreciate how Herb (and others) will try a new speaker with several familiar amplifiers, a new amplifier with several favorite speakers, a new source component in a longtime reference system, etc., to find the best synergy. Helps give the reader a broader perspective, and a better idea of how something might work in his own system.

It's also good when reviewers are upfront about their sonic preferences and prejudices. Gives the reader some important context in which to evaluate their reviews.

And then, JA's indispensable measurements ground everything in objective reality, and often provide a fascinating counterpoint to the reviewer's subjective judgments.
