RE: Question:

Was one version much more expensive than the other? (facile answer)

I would probably not be surprised but I do not know Smith and I do not know which two versions of KOB are involved. (N.B.: I do not know much about any versions of KOB except that there are many.)

Can I assume, though, that you are attempting to make an analogy between your hypothetical and the possible inability of reviewers to distinguish in a blind test differences they discern in a sighted test? Well, I find that I can discern similar differences in both blind and sighted tests when I have subjected myself to both. OTOH, it is simply impractical/impossible to blind-test everything and I usually have to rely on rapid A/B switching to supplement the longer auditions. Also, I listen differently under blind, sighted A/B and alternating longer auditions.
