RE: if only stereophile could stop....

Does that happen very often? We do do a lot of comparisons, and do try to put
the component being reviewed in its context. But this is not as
straightforward as some believe because you can't do meaningful comparisons
with products with which you are not familiar. Take my review of the
Musical Fidelity AMS100 amplifier, linked below. This amplifier costs
$19,999. In the review I compared it with two amplifiers, the sonic
signatures of which are very familiar to me, the Classe CTM-600 monoblock
($13,000/pair) and the MBL 9007 monoblock ($42,800/pair). Neither
competes directly on price with the Musical Fidelity, but as they bracket
the price of the amplifier under review, I felt that the comparisons were
both valid and useful.
