While there is some jazz on this double album that might be called "dixiland" there are other categories as well. I would characterize this music as "eclectic jazz". If I went out for an evening to a bar with a date I would not be disappointed in hearing music like this. The musical performances are not outstanding or memorable, but the music is enjoyable and the recording is excellent. The recording pretty much proves that getting good sound starts and ends with the microphones and their locations, assuming that nothing else is screwed up. I escaped this recording in its heyday. However, I admit to recently downloading the 88/24 version from HDtracks.com. If this recording doesn't sound good there is something seriously wrong with your system.
If you want to listen to great jazz on an audiophile label then there are better choices. Here's one of my favorites.
