Perhaps you shouldn't have been quite so bored by IT.
I paid attention, learned what I needed to know and still have all the computer files from the 80s, 90s and 00s that I wanted to keep. As I mentioned in another message, I just opened some files from the mid 80s with no problems.
I haven't lost any music files since I ripped my existing CD collection either.

Moving computer files to new media isn't hard. Converting formats isn't hard.
