Re: Sterophile Reviewing Policy

Advertising has nothing to do with whether or not a product gets
chosen for review in Stereophile. Period.

Limited distribution does, because as I explain in the March essay,
a review represents a considerable investment on the part of the
magazine and I don't want to use those resources publishing a full
review of a product that my readers can't audition for themselves.
Such products do get covered in our regular columns, however, and
John Marks will be writing about a Supratek product in his June "5th
Element."

A while back, there was some criticism of Stereophile on the Asylum
based on the fact that we had not reviewed a speaker that had been
lauded by TAS. At the time the TAS review appeared, that manufacturer
had just _one_ dealer, in San Diego. He now has 3, and should have 5
soon, at which time Stereophile will review one of his products. I
respectfully suggest that Stereophile's policy serves its readers
better than does TAS's.

I continue to be puzzled why so much criticism is directed at
Stereophile, which has publicly known policies on matters such as
this, and not at other publications, which do not?
