I still get fantastic sound out of my Monarchy Audio 22Bse DAC that uses straight up true 20bit DACs (Burr Brown PCM63K) with an 8x oversampling chip (Burr Brown 1700 or something like that). It also uses very high speed I/V conversion (transimpedance amps) and a very low phase shift analog filter. Beats every mid priced upsampling DAC or player that I have heard so far. I can't comment on the really expensive ones (like the Audio Aero Prima for example) because I haven't lived with them.
