What you have described is interpolation. It is used to generate higher frequency (weekly) information from low frequency (monthly) information. Indeed, this type of thing is common, just like curve fitting.But upsampling in audio doesn't attempt to generate high frequency information. The original signal has been band limited, so there was no high frequency information in it to begin with. Then the samples, assuming sufficient sampling frequency, describe the original information completely. You can get the original waveform back by filtering or you can use various math methods to generate intermediate points on the original waveform digitally. There is no interpolation in an attempt to generate lost information.
