In the NY Hudson river valley, there currently is a fairly large battle going on between the goverment and GE. It has escalated to the point where local GE employees are required to post "stop the dredging" signs on their front lawns. GE for decades (!) poured raw PCB waste products directly into the Hudson River from its Capacitor plant, thus dumping untold tons of PCB into the river bed. It is now the subject of a huge public campaign, as GE feels the river is fine, and it should not pay the $500 million plus clean up fee. It is quite a fiasco.
If they dregde, which the goverment recomends, it will be a 5 year plus effort. GE has geared up its PR machine and poured tens if not hundreds of millions of dollars into TV and print ads to try to convince everyone the the river should not be dredged. It is an epic public - private sector battle, and who knows where it will end up. All over PCBs.
