The veneer would stick just fine if you seal the end grain with Bondo auto body filler and sand it real smooth. Just put on a thin layer at a time and once you get the end grain filled and real smooth use real good contact cement and it will work.
Or another easier alternative is to put a nice half round molding around the outside in the front and some nice quarter inch thick fir stripping on the rear or you can use half round on the rear as well. If you go this route you might want to use a half round or fir stripping a little wider than the thickness of the wood. This way it hides the seam better.
