I successfully added two mono attenuators in the output stage of my DAC 4.1 which have proved to be very successful. My DAC then feeds directly into my Parasound Halo A21 power amp and then out to my Magnepan 1.7's. This arrangement works very well. Because of the large C-core transformers I couldn't get a connection rod between them, so I had to site the attenuators directly on the front panel and use a shielded cable to connect them up, but this has worked well. I too have a Stax and I think if I was to do it again I'd have a stereo attenuator on the rightside (where there is plenty of room) and an output selector on the left (where there is little room) so I could have both headphones and power amp hooked up at the same time.
