I kept my CDP for about a year after starting with the Mac, then after realising I was not going back sold it. If you go Coax, BNC is a better option (not sure if the V Link has this).
The issue with Digital is not loss it is addition, lots of nasty things and noises from PC's etc. I have my hard drives (custom built for low noise), Mac Mini and USB converter all on custom built linear PSU's.
PC audio is no different from other Digital music forms in that it needs time and effort to get right.
The music players IMHO make a big difference. I don't care that I don't understand why, they just do to my ears, you can free trial all of them. itunes on it's own did not work for me.
All my CD's are burnt directly from Disc by the Mac which is carefully backed up.
