1. Transformers do have mechanical hum. I usually mount transformers and chokes on rubber mounts (http://www.vibrationmounts.com/rfq/vm01029.htm). That decouples the transformers vibration from the amplifier. It made a difference with my L2.
2. Not without desoldering them at one end to measure them.
3. If balance is perfect - yes.
4. A bigger mains transformer. A better volume control (like TKD 2P-2511S).
My L2 tends to oscillate a bit so the gridstoppers for the phono board made quite a difference going from Shinkoh to Charcroft.
replace the first power supply cap with a paper in oil type cap. ASC 386 or the likes. 20uF value.
