AN V10 preamp kit amp

First post, be gentle!

I have recently acquired an Audio Note V10 preamp kit amp which includes phono stage. Its already built and I've spent less than a week listening to it (in comparison with a Music First Passive Mk2 passive).

I bought it partly to satisfy curiosity, partly because I fancied a valve pre into my Krell 402, and partly so I could tinker with it.

So couple of questions spring to mind which I would be grateful for some helpful advice on:

1. The transformer seems to hum quite quietly - is there a potential grounding issue or how do I verify that the transformer is working properly? (date marked 2002)

2. It has been fitted with Jensen caps, is there any way of verifying their health and performance.

3. It has a balance control - is there benefit in removing this?

4. If people have knowledge of the kit and its performance is there any other typical checks or improvements I should be considering?
