Interesting that this thread popped up. I've been using a Crown Reference II amplifier for the past few years with an Audio Research LS5 MKii/GNSC mod preamp and Revel Studios and always felt it was lacking a bit in delicacy and smoothness, but on the plus side offered a ton of power 300w+ a side, drives low impedance, and has super high dampening factor, plus since I'm a Harman Employee I got it at a good price. My gut says that it has too much protection and monitoring stuff for professional studio use on it, so it probably could sound better. That said I just picked up a pair of the much touted NuForce 9s to try out today and after trying them i still prefer the Crown. Part of it is probably that it has twice as much power, but it did seem like it also had a lower octave of bass extension and more drive even when played at roughly the same SPL. The NuForces seemed smooth and tubeish and probably dealt with vocals better, but also like a tube amp it seemed softish on the bottom and the top seems a little ill defined as well. (Not to mention as discussed on this forum they put out enough RF to render my tuner useless).
I had hoped that i would fall in love with the Nuforces but while they seemed nice and depending on what you're looking for are probably a great amp, for Rock n Roll and power I'm going to stick with the Crown. At somepoint I'll probably try a Jeff Rowland or some other high end, old school linear amplifer which will hopefully give me a bit more of the delicacy and smoothness I'm looking for.
