RE: Topping Pre90 - larger display

Yes, I am still using the Pre90, it won the shootout with the Schiit Kara.

It's driving a Hypex Nilai 250W stereo amp (kit). I have the amp set to low gain (3.9X).

I don't notice it getting warm at all, it was just shut off about 15 minutes ago after playing for several hours and it's cool to the touch everywhere.

I have the Pre90 power switch permanently set to ON, so when I power on the system with my Furman PL-8 series II, the preamp comes on first. The amp is also permanently switched on, but it powers up in standby until I hit the little button on the front, which I do after the preamp has powered up. Absolutely no pops or other funny noises powering up or down. And I power down the preamp first (with the remote) then the amp.

Yes, the remote works poorly unless you aim it coming in from the left side. The IR receiver is installed in the wrong location. However I use a $9 IR remote extender from Amazon, and position the emitter in front of the display panel so the IR receiver in the Pre90 can see it. Then the remote works fine from 12-15 feet away.

The sound quality from the Pre90 / Hypex Nilai is just superb, the best I have heard anywhere. Kal was right on the mark with his review.

The "Ultra-high Performance NFCA modules" in the Pre90 are made by Texas Instruments and cost less than $2 apiece. But TI apparently did their homework when designing/manufacturing these, and also the op-amps used.

I'm feeding the Pre90 with a Bryston BDA-2 D/A converter and the Pre90 carefully preserves all of the class-A quality of the Bryston output stages.

Should you decide to order a Pre90, I recommend buying through Apos. I had the preamp delivered to my door from China 3 days after ordering online, and shipping was free!
