The M33 won all those accolades for its many capabilities in addition to the basic power amp inside. That internal power amp is, essentially, the NAD C298 (currently $2,399) and it would be a better comparison to a Purifi-based amp assembled by a small company or an enthusiast. For that, see below.
"Would a garage-built DIY job using the Purifi Eval board have matched the M33 sound?" Well, ignoring your dismissive reference to DIY-ers, I'd guess yes even though many of us would pay the increment to have NAD standing behind our amp.
