Most new production tubes, especially the small signal tubes are of poor quality, and rather expensive. (There are a few exceptions).
I had a friend make a DIY preamp (Thomas Mayer 6AH4 clone), and a pair of 8552 power amps, with 6BL7 input tubes. The NOS radio and TV tubes are much higher quality.
A restored Scott or Fisher is a good alternative choice. Radio Electric Supply still has quality NOS tubes, at a price.
