years now, and still love it. Alternating between several tubes (NOS National Union and Tung-Sol "mouse-ears" 6SN7s and CBS 5692) without hearing too much difference between them, though I slightly prefer the TS. My impression of passive vs. tube buffer is, at least in my system, with the tube engaged, there's a VERY slight decrease in transparency but a definite increase in fullness and, especially, dynamics. So, like you, the tube pretty much stays engaged.
I only have trouble with gain when using one particular very low-output phono cartridge, and even then it's not that bad.
