One of the best sounding tube preamps I know was the VacuumState RTP-3D, which used their own, solid state, regulator (they called it the Superreg). This could be purchased separately and applied to other circuits and really worked well.
I am not convinced though that it is only from nostalgia. At least for rectifiers there is something really going on. I have been part of a number of rectifier rolling sessions, both for preamps and DACs, and we found A) the quality of the rectifier really matters and B) When a SS one was substituted...it really sucked in comparison.
I think the harmonic qualities that we like about tubes in circuits also matter in power supplies as those can creep into the signal.
