Just South of my home town, up until I was thru my 2nd year of HS.....

ONLY time I ever saw Peoria was from the water. Family vaction in the boat.....starting basically in Lake Michigan, going down the Chicago River, to the Illinois River than thru all sorts of towns, ending up in Kentucky Lake.....Where I saw a sternwheeler....Call it '64 or maybe '65.......

River running is quite different than open water...be it ocean or medium on up lake cruising. You must watch CONSTANTLY for obstructions, 'floaters' and the navigation aids. Not to mention 'tow' traffic.....Somethimes a tow would be 2 bardges WIDE and 8 long. Or larger. Stay OUT of their way!
