There should be a list of best amps in the past 10 years or 20 years, but we keep hanging on to the distant past. I've been in the hobby since about 1993 but the only ones I actually recognize and resonate with me on those lists are:- Cary CAD-805
- Krell KSA-100
- Krell KSA-50
- McIntosh MC275While I've certainly heard of most of the other brands and some models, I am not familiar with them. Of course I've heard of the ST-70 and while it may well be an iconic amp, it's probably like an old vintage car. Very cool, but probably not up to modern standards in performance. OK, I'll probably get flamed for that remark!
So my question is, what good is such a list today if these amps are extinct and mostly out of reach? Unless you find one used that has been recapped and in great working order you're SOL. I'd rather see a list of more recent hits. But I guess reveling in nostalgia is what we do when we get older. Remember when a gallon of ice cream was a gallon? Remember when a gallon of gas was 25-cents?
