When I was 17, my taste greatly exceeded my budget. I borrowed an Audio Research SP-3a for a weekend from a dealer (who later became a friend and employer) to compare with my H-K Citation 11.
I can still recall how much more lifelike the shakers that open Steely Dan's Do It Again sounded. I simply could not afford such a product then and Julian knew it.
That experience, however, left an indelible impression. Seven years later, I purchased an SP-6C. :)
Fast forward to 2000. A reviewer friend got three Kimber Palladian power cords and I had difficultly imagining how they could have much audible effect. I was pretty familiar with his system at the time, but asked if I could borrow them for the weekend.
Now I understood the value!
Similarly, I couldn't afford those at the time, but that experience shaped later purchases of JPS Labs, Harmonic Technology, and even Asylum power cords.
I'm convinced that in-home auditions are the best way to truly assess how a given component works in your own system.
