Not mail order, but
in the late 90s I found a dealer in Pittsburgh who had a Mesa Baron (amplifier) for sale, & he let me audition it for a weekend.I spent two days listening to it nonstop & on Sunday night I had just about made my mind up to buy it. I decided to hook my Cary SLA 70 back up & listen to "Sweet Jane" as done by The Cowboy Junkies for my test. The size of the presentation was not there, but there was the thing about the "black background" & the sound of the cymbals shimmering in the air that I wasn't getting from The Baron.
When I brought the amp back to the dealer & explained my impressions, he did say something about how an old shoe that you are used to feels good, but the return went hitch free.
