When I still resided in my native New Jersey, I had access to several high-end dealers in NJ, NYC, and PA. But where I now reside in Florida requires purchasing audio gear online. I miss borrowing demo gear for a home audition.Since 2017 I have made numerous online purchases and have returned for a refund one preamp, two integrated amplifiers, three CD players, one CD transport, and three phono preamps. One of the integrated amps and two of the phono preamps were defective.
Also, I bought a solid-state preamp from Cary Direct. After an in-home trial I traded it in for their SLI-80 tube integrated amp, which I kept and enjoy immensely (after replacing all the stock Electro-Harmonix tubes). The folks at Cary were exceptionally helpful, including well after the purchase with general questions.
Returns for all the components mentioned were easy and problem-free. The only penalty was return UPS costs (shipments to my home were free).
Despite enormous online research via reading magazine reviews and forum posts prior to making a purchase, many times the sonics of a product are disappointing and worse than the component I was attempting to upgrade. I always feel a bit guilty for not keeping a product, but returns are often necessary.
My favorite dealers, from which I have received hassle-free refunds with no restocking fees, are Audio Advisor, Music Direct, ListenUp Audio, Crutchfield, and Amazon.
