When this happened all the sudden, what was the source ? The DAC ?
I can tell you from an engineering standpoint that it is highly unlikely that both channels would develop a fault affecting their frequency response. I would say over 1,000:1.
What other sources do you have ? Can you plug something else in and see how it sounds ? Not a cassette deck though, if you get a shitty tape it will probably sound muffled anyway. But like a CD player, on its own, not through the DAC, or a tuner.
It is unlikely a DAC will do that, but everything else is more unlikely.
Just using my form of logic here, how does it sound on other sources ? I know some people now only have a DAC, in this case rather than running out and buying a new one to try, maybe borrow one.
Fred: "Hey Barney, you got a spare CD player laying around ?".
Barney: "Sure, I'll go find it".
Fred: "Oh by the way do you have a CD I can play in it ?".
