I agree, a passive preamp + an active buffer. And just to keep the nomenclature clean - it's a unity gain preamp not a zero gain (Gain= Vo/Vi).
I have never tried a passive preamp, namely because I listen primarily to vinyl and need preamplification. However, looking at a block diagram of my preamp, it appears to be the same as a passive (selector and attenuator) + buffer except the "buffer section" provides gain. So the sonic result of an active preamp compared to a passive + buffer would be the same provided the buffer and gain section are of the same quality.
