If the subs crossover is in play, I'd try THAT even with the additional connection complexity. Running the mains AND the sub over an overlap of frequencies will 'muddy' the sound, in my experience.
When I got my mains out of the way using a low-cut filter, that cleaned up the bass DRAMATICALLY.
