RE: Cary CAD 120S II

I think it would be worth while only if you preferred the sound of the Cary amps you borrowed and wanted that sound all the time. I typically also like the synergy of same brand pre & power. A friend was a Cary dealer for a while, sounded to me like all the components had a Cary "house sound". Cary has begun selling direct and offers a 60 day return window. Their components also tend to require a good long break in period.

Tube amps can vary in response/character as widely as solid state in general. So in thinking of going tube, you want to think of what type of sound, or change, you want.
