JLandreth, the Shindo moving coil inputs on the preamps are designed for low impedance cartridges, in particular, Ortofon SPUs. Other options being Miyabi, Koetsu, Transfiguration, Supex, etc...
You also have the option of upgrading by using an external transformer but this will cost a pretty penny.
I think you are right on track with an SPU. Enjoy!
