My system:Vandersteen 2Ce Sig II
VPI Classic w/Lyra Delos
Manley Chinook phono
Rogue Metis Magnum preamp
McCormack DNA 0.5 with Rev1 board and wiringMy local dealer (Taylor at Goldprint...awesome guy) lent me the Hydra over the weekend. I wanted to hear how the Hydra sounded and was looking forward to it matched with the Rogue Metis Magnum preamp.
The Hydra was a wonderful amp, non-fatiguing and very detailed but compared to the McCormack, was a bit soft in the overall presentation. The Hydra did not have the snap of the snare drum and the low bass notes were just not defined as I was accustomed to with the McCormack. Both are 100/wpc and I gave both plenty of warm-up time prior to the listening sessions.
As you know, this is all system and room dependent but the difference was apparent right away. I listened to the Hydra for hours on end both days and it never captured the sound for me, no matter the type of music.
