I cannot give you any references but you can experience this by test. Start with a mono recording and play it, first, over one (center) speaker and, then, over the stereo pair. Both will localize in the center but the tonal "body" will be different. Since all the signals are the same, the difference is an error introduced by splitting it electronically and recombining it acoustically.
