If you're truly interested in good dedicated audio listening my advice is not to compromise good sound by using A/V equipment as the foundation. If you assemble a well focused stereo system you'll be able to use it for video as well. Center channels, surrounds, sub-woofers, and the like generally don't create realistic sound stages, especially in the lower price ranges.
The best way to assemble a good stereo system is to find a retailer willing to let you listen to stereo equipment combinations in your price range. Don't get fixated on reviews or recommendations, but rather what sounds good to you, because that's the top priority.
