The Marantz 8004 is rated at 70W, the NAD 326BEE at 50W.You don't say which Monitor Audio speakers you are using, but not all Monitor Audio speakers are that easy to drive (e.g. 89 dB and 6 ohms).
You also don't say which sources you are using.
(The listing of your system in AA doesn't seem to be up to date. You certainly had some great stuff in 2005! I do note though that you are into astronomy and telescope building - me too!)
I don't dispute what you are hearing, but it may be the result of system matching in your particular system, rather than the "absolute" sound characteristics of the two integrateds you are comparing.
For example, maybe the NAD is working so well for me because I am using very efficient speakers (Klipsch Heresy III, at 99 dB) and a "warmish" CD player (Marantz SA8001).
