I definitely agree that a tube pre and solid state amp is the best of both worlds. With power hungry speakers like your Maggies,and even my Vandersteens to a lesser extent, its really the way to go.
For me, its also a matter of cost effectiveness. To get enough watts to open up these types of speakers with tube amps would be beyond my budget. I've heard the argument that solid state offers better control and better bass than tube, but I've heard some high-end high-power tube amplification that left me wanting for nothing. Again, way out of reach for me.
So for my taste and budget, this combo is hard to beat.
